EDWARDES FAMILY, CRYNFRYN AND TANFFYNNON, PENUWCH


The collection pertains to several generations of the Edwardes family of Penuwch: Eleanor and John Edwardes of Crynfryn (d 1890-91); Daniel Edwardes of Tanffynon, who appears to have built the present house in the 1890s; his sons David (Dafydd) and John (Jack). A run of Daniel Edwardes’ diaries opens in 1869/74, entries petering out in the summer of 1923 when the writer was confined to bed (MUS/45/2). Whilst Dafydd stayed at Tanffynon, becoming prominent in local shows, Jack sojourned in Malaya (Federated Malay States). The family had Church connections and the collection includes material relating to the Rev David Edwardes of Crynfryn, sometime headmaster of Denstone College, and the Rev E. Edwardes, who appeared at Dolgellau and Aberystwyth. However, Daniel Edwards belonged to the Calvinistic Methodists, his diaries providing a comprehensive calendar of preachers and their texts.
Highlights of the collection are the late 19th century Sunday School account books (MUS/45/1/2), a large bundle of material relating to the Penuwch shows of 1920 and 1921 (MUS/45/6/1) and a notebook from a Malayan rubber estate in the 1920s that later accommodated a lengthy manuscript memoir of Welsh cobs, presumably written by Dafydd Edwardes (MUS/45/7). The collection runs up to the end of the 1960s.

1. Four Christmas post-cards mounted on card, from Bessie to Master David and Master John Edwardes. Two are from 1907 and feature humorous cats and two from 1909 feature scenic views, one of Helmdon Church.
2. Two cards posted from Shifnal. One, addressed to Master David Edwardes, signed ‘E E’ and posted in Feb. 1909, shows the stocks at Norton, Salop, the other, addressed to Mr D. Edwardes, signed Dai and posted in 1910, St Mary’s Church, Shrewsbury.
3. Two cards from Thomas, in Portland, Oregon, to Masters David and John Edwardes, posted on 24 October 1910. The card to David shows sacks of wheat being stacked and has a message in Welsh; that addressed to John shows pheasants and is written in English.
4. Four cards posted from the Cardiff area, c. 1911-1913. Three of these, (including one from Maggie, with concertinaed views of Penarth) are addressed to Mr David Edwardes, the other, with a view of Senghenydd, to Mrs M. Jones of Gwarllyn, Penuwch.

Interwar material (1918-1939)

MUS/45/6/1 Material relating to 1920 and 1921 annual shows of the Llangeitho and District Horticultural and Poultry Society (Honorary Secretary D. Edwardes, Tanffynon).

1.Large bundle of loose papers concerned with the Llangeitho Horticultural Poultry, Dog, Cat and Rabbit Show, 7 September 1921. Includes printed certificates of entry and handwritten lists of entrants matched with their show numbers, as well as correspondence with sponsors, suppliers and participants. Also flyer for the Society and their main sponsor, Spratt’s animal food.
2. Small black notebook belonging to Edwardes of Tanffynon containing weather diary for January 1919 and lists of poultry arranged by class.
3. Show posters, all in poor condition.
3/1. Poster for the First Annual Show �" Flowers, Vegetables, Preserved Fruit, Dairy Produce, Honey, Poultry, Eggs, Rabbits, Cats and Dogs �" to be held at the Jubilee Hall (a building well adapted for the purpose), Wed. Sept. 1st 1920, sponsored by Spratt’s Patent Poultry Meal and Jeyes best and safest Disinfectant (used in the Royal Stables and Kennels).
3/2. Poster for Llangeitho Second Annual Show, 1921, details and sponsors similar to previous year, but featuring large and colourful advertisement for the Patent Poultry Meal.
3/3. Larger format poster: banner, ‘The Exhibits are fed on Spratt’s Dog Foods’, over young woman in green coat and cloche-style hat (over bobbed hair?), with bloodhound and Scottie dog(?), by I Montague Nathan. Jeyes’ best and cheapest Disinfectant banner below.

Contents of envelope marked, ‘17 odd scraps of paper + 1 stamp’, as well as ‘... Midlands and Scottish Railway Co. Live Stock ticket or label. The odd scraps of paper include a slip, ‘Mr J. Edwardes, The Rubber Research Institute, Kuala Lumpur, F.M.S.’ (for photographs see MUS/45/4/8, for other Malay material MUS/45/2/21, MUS/45/7, MUS/45/6/6). Other ‘scraps’ appear to be vouchers or tickets, stamped with the imprint of Penuwch Sheep Dog Trials or inscribed ‘Tea’. Others are blank, whilst another has the address of Elizabeth Edwardes, The Hospital, Oswestry.

List of Passengers per Twin S.S. “Leicestershire”, sailing from Colombo, 2nd April, 1924. Includes Mr J. Edwards amongst those sailing from Rangoon to Marseilles.

Large black and red bound Malaya notebook. Original entries, along with loose shed inventories and daily statement forms, concern the Ledbury Estate (rubber), one of the latter being dated August 1923. Entries include cost of living estimate for household including bathroom coolie and a list of distances to other estates and places. This Malay material can be related to Jack Edwardes of the Rubber Research Institute, Kuala Lumpur, F.M.S. (see MUS/45/6/2). Other inclusions include two manuscripts written on loose sheets, backs of letters and envelopes, one a reminiscence of Welsh cobs, the other in Welsh, a reply to an application for the position of Milk Recorder (1943), blank telegraphic forms and a letter dated December 23rd 1968 from Gwen to ‘Dear Dad’. This material appears to relate to Dafydd Edwardes, Tanffynon.

Large bundle of material pertaining to Dafydd Edwardes, Tanffynon. The earliest item is an uncompleted circular form, dated August 18 1939, concerning the Welsh Farmers’ Tour, 1939, that was due to depart for Ireland on the 20th September. The latest is a poster advertising an ‘Anti R.D.B. Rally’ at Aberaeron for the 10th Oct. 1969, organised by the Farmers’ Union of Wales. The bundle contains a certain amount of material pertaining to the Welsh Pony and Cob society, as well as licences, for TV, guns and dogs, correspondence concerning livestock. Poultry and eggs, and various receipts.

Collection of perhaps 84 tickets, prize certificates, rosettes and numbered labels from events including the Pontrhydfendigaid Show (1943), Penuwch Sheep Dog Trials (1948-1956), United Counties Agricultural Society, Carmarthen Show (1948), Young Farmers’ Club Show and Races (1948), Aberystwyth and District Canine Society Show (1949), Llwyngroes Annual Show, Sports, Carnival and Horse Races (1950), Royal Agricultural Society of England, Norwich Show (1957), the latter being judges’ refreshment vouchers.
