CONTEXT
Administrative/Bibliographical history: Dinas Secondary School was opened on 7 September 1948 in the wake of the Butler Education Act of 1944 and as part of the Local Education Authority’s scheme for reorganization in the Aberystwyth area. Housed at the old Alexandra Road elementary school in the centre of Aberystwyth town, it started with 341 pupils and had a staff of 15 fulltime teachers under the headmaster, Hywel Watkins. The inadequacies of the original Alexandra Road site led to the new Dinas School building being opened on the Waun site in September 1955 with 423 pupils. In 1973 extensions were made to the school buildings, and in 1975 Dinas school became Penglais Comprehensive School as it remains today.
